Broom Making: “Whisk Away the Weekend"
Lenton Williams

Course Description:
During this class, students of all experience levels will enjoy making several small hand tied brooms and brushes in the Appalachian Style. You will make a small cobweb broom, a hearth or RV broom, a whiskbroom and some kitchen brushes as time allows. You will use a natural broomcorn and natural handles provided by the instructor. This will be a fun course and you can work at your own pace, but can work faster if more brooms are desired. Broom Corn can be irritating to bare skin, for some people, so you will need to bring long pants and shirts to wear.

Bio:
Lenton first started making brooms after studying the process under master broom maker, Annie Hurst Bell, at the John C. Campbell Folk School in early 2000. Since then he has literally made hundreds of cob webbers, hearth brooms, kitchen brushes, whisk brooms and larger kitchen brooms in the Appalachian Style using the hand tied process and braiding or weaving every broom he makes. He takes a broom course each year trying to learn different techniques from other craftsmen and just because he loves to make brooms, Lenton says that Shaker Box Making is his passion. Making brooms is his therapy since it is something that can be done almost anywhere and anytime without a lot of preparation. He teaches broom making at JCC Folk School and demonstrates at several festivals each year. He is a member of Alabama Designer Craftsmen and Alabama Woodturners Association.

Extra supplies fee: $12
