Basket Making: “Treeleather Bark Baskets”
Mark Kolinski

Course Description:
Using bark harvested from several different tree species, students will experiment with several types of both folded and woven bark baskets. Harvesting and processing of the various types of bark will be discussed. Expect to complete at least 3 or 4 baskets in this unique class. Previous basketry experience is not necessary, but moderate hand strength is occasionally required.

Bio:
Mark Kolinski has been making hand-split white oak baskets since 1981 and has been an instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School since 1995. He began experimenting with tree bark in the early 1990’s and his unique bark baskets now included bark from many different types of trees. Mark has a B.S. in forestry and is no Staff Forester for Wild South, a local non-profit protection organization headquartered in Wren, Alabama.

Extra supplies fee: $30 to $50, depending on amount of wood each student uses.
