McDowell Book List

A student once said “When you open a book, you open doors for yourself.”  This book list is provided so that you can help your students open those doors to nature knowledge before and after your trip to McDowell.  Please note that although the starred books “*” are staff favorites and have been thoroughly scrutinized by the staff, all of the books have not been through such a rigorous inspection.  We suggest that you pre-read each book to assure that it matches the developmental needs of your students.   This is a work in progress, please contribute to it.

Suggestions for Uses

Pre/post trip:

  • Make available in the classroom for free time reading.  Or ask your librarian to establish a temporary section in the library of trip-related books.
  • Have the students read one book and use a KWR (Know, Want to Know and Learned) chart.
  • Read-aloud. Allow the students to illustrate scenes from the book.
  • Arrange for an author visit to your school.
  • Assign individual book reports or reports on specific subjects.
  • Use a book as the theme for a special presentation, play or day.
  • Play the “What if…” game and have students write alternate endings to one of the stories.
  • In preparation for journaling at the Center, have students read/listen to passages from some of the great naturalists.
  • Post trip, have the students write their own mini-book about one of the McDowell classes.
  • Use one of the activity guides provided with many of the books.
  • Arrange for a local field trip (even just on your school grounds) based on the book.

During Trip:

  • Provide books for individual reading on the bus or in the cabins.
  • Have chaperones read books aloud in the cabins at bed time.
  • Chapter books are the perfect length to use with a three-day trip.

Get creative, develop your own good ideas and tell us about them so we can share them with other teachers!

Please send your suggestions, additions or comments about the book list to:

Favorite Authors:  Everything we have read from these authors is good and applicable to our curriculum: Jean Craighill George, Gary Paulson, Jim Arnosky, Douglass Wood

Vendors:  If you can’t find these books in your library (or access them through Interlibrary Loan), here are some websites for purchasing them:

Acorn Naturalists   www.acronnaturalist.com/store/
North Word Press   http://www.tnkidsbooks.com
Dawn Publications  www.dawnpub.com

The following table lists the codes and key to notes used in the reading list:

Please note, the holdings of local libraries vary widely.  Your little library may have some of these “hard to find” books or may not have some of the “easy to find” books.  If you need to use interlibrary loan to access books, plan in extra time for shipping.  Don’t forget to check the holdings of university libraries too.  (Troy State University has many of these books.)

  • E = Easy – found in most local libraries
  • M = Moderate – probably in your library system but not in your library.
  • H = Hard – number of books in the state are limited
