White Oak Basketry: From Tree to Heirloom

Bio:
Bill and Mary Ann Smith have been working in white oak for over 20 years. They have studied and mastered this traditional style of basket making which uses native white oak trees. They are the resident basketmakers at Tannehill Historical State Park, juried members of Alabama Designer Craftsmen, and members of Southern Artistry, inducted in 2008. Bill and Mary Ann also teach at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina.
Course Description:
In this intense class students will learn to hand split and scrape white oak splints for basketmaking. Then, using materials prepared by the instructors, students will make a white oak basket that will be an heirloom for generations to come. We will discuss the proper way to choose a tree and sudents will hand carve the handle to fit their basket. Come join us for this traditional basket-making adventure. Moderate hand strength is required for this class. You will create and take home the basket below:
